When Marie Forleo talks about discovering life coaching as a career, she says she “read about the profession in the newspaper, and it felt like angels started singing.” She just knew it was her thing.

I’ve started seven businesses in the past ten years. These same angels sang every time. Yet, most of my businesses failed. The ones that succeeded pushed me beyond my limits in a way the angels couldn’t have predicted.

I don’t trust the angels anymore. Here’s why you shouldn’t, either.

Beginners’ enthusiasm gives you a false feeling of achievement.

I was so keen on finding my passion that beginners’ enthusiasm alone felt like an achievement. Hallelujah, I’ve found it!

Everyone says loving what you do is a prerequisite for success, so I thought I’d laid the foundation.

Only that’s not a foundation at all. If anything, it’ll be the end of you. This Stanford study shows that people who believe in “passions” are less likely to be successful because they expect things to be easy, so they’re more likely to give up sooner.
