I don’t want to be a housewife, I don’t want to be a housewife, I don’t want to be a housewife. That’s what I was mumbling to myself the other day as I was cleaning up for the 17th time that morning,” my friend, Magi, told me.

Like me, she has two small children less than two years apart.

Unlike me, she doesn’t have a lot of help. Her older daughter refuses to spend an entire day (an entire day?!) in pre-school, so she only goes in the morning. My toddler didn’t have a say on the matter.

And she doesn’t have a babysitter for the baby. I do.

So when we talk, she talks, and I listen. It’s only fair. She needs to get it out of her chest.

I sympathize that she never drinks her coffee while it’s still hot, sitting in her backyard, looking at how the leaves move from the wind. She doesn’t have a moment to catch up on Agatha Christie’s autobiography. I even get the chance to write sometimes. The audacity!

But, Magi, it turns out I shouldn’t have been that considerate with you. Studies say motherhood is really a dream job.

Wait. What?

What makes for a dream job.
